The bulbs are going in.

Happy Thursday everyone! It is so warm still and when the sun comes out it is baking and steamy, so still ideal growing conditions with all the rain in between times…! The broad beans are growing way too quickly as a result and are already starting to flower. Usually they would sit in the ground all winter building their growing potential ready to burst forth in the Spring when the weather warms up then, not now! It looks like we will need to start again with sowing next years crop; fortunately we have plenty of seed.
This week we have been getting the garlic into the ground. Hopefully we won’t end up regretting doing this in this warm weather too, as all the biggest and fattest cloves have all been used - around 600 of them! I do love the broad beans and the garlic for doing their thing at this time of year, when the rest of the gardens feel like they are winding down and heading into hibernation state: still and seemingly inert, there are still signs of vigour and life.
The sweetcorn is ready and we’re steadily putting it out on the table. Each one is it’s own surprise package of edibleness! Until it’s opened and cooked, you just don’t know what you’re going to get!
The lettuce seed keeps on keeping on and the echinacea just need a dry spell for us to collect the seed. (And the sunflowers too - before the birds demolish the lot!)
Phil has also been hard at work creating us some shelving in the new storage room this week and so we now have loads of strong and sturdy shelving with which to get organised! Hurrah! I took a couple of photos of our ‘giant bauble’ tree that’s down by the garlic - I do find it amazing that with such a dry summer our young little apple trees have managed to produce the most enormous and juicy fruit. Thank you to Carole and her careful pruning and considerate removal of some of the fruit in earlier months.
There is also a picture of Polly’s birthday cake as the edible Griffin flowers were SO pretty.
And look how good our table looks!
