Watering…and yet more watering…

We seem to have a bit of an on-going lull in the garden except for the watering and yet more watering. With this sustained heat, it’s as though the gardens are telling us clearly to ‘Keep Off!’ Pulling weeds only dislodges the fragile sandy soil and tends to pull wanted plants up at the same time. For the main part the soil just won’t give up the weeds, they are being held on to so tightly. If we cut the weeds it feels best to lay the cuttings onto the exposed baked soil to offer shade…
It’s amazing that things are still growing as well as they are. The salad in the poly tunnel is thriving and the tomatoes are ripening very quickly.
We have seen so many Finches in amongst the Common Knapweed this week. The bees seem to have made way for the birds to come and feast on the seeds, we assume. They lift off and then resettle in great swathes as we move about the gardens,
