Time for transplanting seedlings…

This week we have been so grateful for the help we’ve received staking peas; hoeing areas and transplanting seedlings to their beds. It all keeps us moving forward. It was a big combined effort getting all the onion seedlings in and weeding and prepping before getting the beetroot and carrot seeds in.

Since 2020 the gardens here at Griffin have been practicing Shumei Natural Agriculture and so each year we are doing our best to learn the lessons offered from the previous years when it comes to seed saving and aligning with the needs of the soil. All of our seeds are going back into the beds that we have grown them in the previous year. As the gardens are still young and we are creating new growing areas still, the only time we might move a crop is when it becomes apparent that we need more space or that the crop is showing us that it will thrive in a different spot.

This year we are growing spinach for the 1st time and it has felt right to put it next to the broad beans as the cauliflowers that were there previously really needed to be under a net. We now have a beautiful, enormous netted area, that has space for 2 types of cabbage, purple sprouting, cauliflowers and brussels sprouts…..!

I’ve also included another shot of our 2 majestic mugworts that gorw each year right at the front of the top orchard - they are an unmissable presence and grow to be enormous! This years apples are also forming well again, no doubt thanks to all the rain we’ve had.
