Sparkling in the sun.

4th September ‘25

Happy showery Thursday everyone! Everything is sparkling in this spell of sun as I’m writing this. The pink haze of cosmos is such an uplifting sight across the gardens and once again, at a time when it feels like the gardens are running away from me, the broad beans come up trumps with tethering me back to the indefatigable resilience and constancy of nature!

The spinach was showing off as I walked around earlier too, as if to say, ‘this is what I can do with a good dose of rain!’ The brassicas were just breathing a massive sigh of relief and the apples, well they seem totally unphased! We have some whoppas growing despite the weeks of dry weather. We were gifted some apples last week but they and the ones Carole took off early to help the trees, have very little juice in them - this is more expected with the weather we’ve had. It’ll be interesting to see how the whoppas left on the trees turn out when they are ready to be picked.

Also a photo of Gigs’ special crab apple tangle tree which is turning into such a lovely shape….

Steve and Es came to volunteer on Tuesday as usual and with the many hands we were able to move the chickens to a better spot and create a run for them. Phil and Steve also started clearing the beds under the brick wall…

Our New shed is inching forwards to completion and the next thing booked in is moving the log burner across from the Old shed. This is happening on Monday, so we need to get the wire wool out and scrub off the rust from where the rain has leaked down the flue over the past few years. Last week the New shed came into its own. It was the perfect place to keep out of the rain and wind whilst still feeling connected to the gardens with the windows and doors open….and still have some space to move!

We also need to do a lot of cutting back (nettles and brambles) and pruning (Buddleia) and guiding plants to where we want them to drop their seeds. (Sunflowers) With this moisture in the ground again now, it feels like we can get on the land again and give it some much needed care.
